11 years of delivering deliciousness...
Time flies when you're having fun piggos & whilst the last 11 years of Little Pig have had their fair share of challenges they've also been a whirlwind of fun, exceptionally delicious food & a lot of love and support from our team, suppliers & incredible customers that's balanced out the hard. Given 60% of businesses in Australia fail within their first three years, we're really proud to have survived & thrived for 11 years (ticked over this May!) & the work that's gone into defying that rather alarming statistic. We've delivered deliciousness alllll over Perth for 50 weeks out of 52 for each of those years & the cherry on top of each proverbial years cake would be our spectacular Christmas feasting menu.
With the launch of our business in May 2013, we took on the challenge of our first ever Christmas feasting menu with a spirit of generosity & the foundations of what we love about Christmas in general, mostly being centred around food, family, down time & more food (if you've ever been to a "Kerristmas" you'll know why putting food twice in that sentence was necessary).
The menu was bold, one might even say extravagant? - we're talking beef fillet, 6kg hams & double turkey rolls for alllll. We were still using a very basic website platform as well so it was all setup in fixed packs, (no mix and match - we were really going in hard with the "you'll just have to trust us that you need that much food" energy...). Family, friends and a fledging cohort of "VIP Pigs" rallied around the menu & we were slightly amazed/alarmed at just how many people adored the idea of the hard yards usually associated with Christmas feasting being removed from their mental load & just the fun & delicious parts left in.
Confidence was high, the week leading up to delivery was "intense" to say the least, but the finished pack was beautiful, boxes looked suitably festive (double bows anyone?) & the actual delivery day went like a dream. Rrrrrrrright up until these little pigs poured themselves a congratulatory 5pm glass of champagne, (see below for the evidence of that moment) took a looooong swig & then answered a phone call to find out that a Fremantle delivery was in Kalamunda & vice versa. One slightly champagne scented mad dash across Perth later, all the boxes were at their respective homes & our first Christmas pack was over. Over the following days, a festive tide of emails, texts and some lovely feedback via our fledging social media pages buoyed these swines confidence, restored our exhausted reserves of energy & we vowed to make the next year even more delicious, easy & fabulous.
Fast forward 11 years to our latest menu & we've streamlined, tweaked, removed/reduced the amount of bows (much a certain creative directors disgust/pack teams joy), upped the ease factor, quadrupled the deliciousness & it's one of the biggest highlights of our operational year. With the opportunity to use some boutique suppliers, ingredients & cooking styles that don't usually fit into our weekly dietitian approved meal kits, we really let our freak flag fly when we ideate the menu & focus on ensuring each kit has only the best local ingredients as it's starting point, the recipes are simple yet incredibly delicious & it's food that you can prepare with ease & confidence over the busy festive season.
The biggest thrill? Seeing our long-term customers use our Christmas menu year after year to make their Christmas deliciously easy, their guests trying us the following year after finding out where that amazing food came from & getting lovebombed with feedback over the holidays and beyond. Comments like: "You got a new customer for food delivery boxes out of Christmas so I’d say that speaks more than my words!", "Thank you so much for helping out with the food orders - had made my life a lot easier over a very busy period" & "Thanks very much we were delighted with everything - delicious and great quality and easy - was a fabulous way to share the load without having to direct things - we loved it." are all printed out, shared with the team & fuel the marketing fire for the following years extravaganza.
We've grown from mum, dad & the two of us doing every single aspect of our Christmas pack (and business in general) to having a team of almost 30 brilliant WA locals who manage every element from the testing, tasting, ordering, database entry, packing, supplier sourcing, sauce making, recipe design, printing, customer service & delivering (and that's a high level break down). So we thought for this year we'd love to introduce you to that team (some of the faces you might already be familiar with from our socials) & what they plan on ordering from our Christmas menu & their plans to make their festive season easy & very delicious.
First up? Our food procurement guru Genna. For those readers from the Wembley school community the start of Genna, or G as we refer to her as, working with the Little Pig team just over a year ago now was a cause for deep sorrow - mostly because this absolute food fiend headed up the school canteen, transforming school lunches & lives with her special brand of magic & a lasagne recipe that continues to be talked about. A chef in a previous life & with her own catering business, G manages all of our food procurement, from supplier reach out, relationships, sourcing, ordering & the logistics of ensuring our reputation of unrivalled produce quality is maintained.
So what's the Christmas plan/food/vibes looking like for you G?
Breakfast/Brunch by the pool with the neighbours, family, friends & dogs, lots of champagne, all day grazing on LOTS of seafood, turkey, ham & big salads. Lunch and dinner are late & relaxed & there's some lush family traditions on the dessert end of things with pavlova & a chocolate log always on the menu. The crowd can hit up to 30 depending on travel plans & extras who need a spot to land for Christmas & key considerations when I'm planning are convenience, quality, value for money & stress free.
What are you ordering from this years menu?
The honey & cider glazed ham with fresh peach relish, the Tuscan style porchetta with pecorino & rosemary, the salmon tarator with herbed crust & honey tahini yoghurt, the lemon & dill marinated prawn & avocado salad with gorj green dressing, the cranberry & orange glazed turkey roll (with reallly good gravy), the vegetarian herb, fetta & sundried tomato filo pie, the brunch box & the sides pack with the ruffled leaf salad & the crispy roasted spuds with the sour cream & fetta dipping sauce.
Inspired by Genna's order? (the lady KNOWS food) you can see the full Christmas menu lineup here or get in touch with The Ginger Pig (aka Chris our customer service guru) here if you've got questions. Annnd if you adore a stroll down memory lane check out the hashtag #10yearsoftlpwtm posts we did last year on instagram celebrating all things Little Pig over the years, including some epic Christmas memes.
Don't forget that every Christmas order goes automatically in the draw to win the rather spectacular KitchenAid Evergreen stand mixer (valued at $1199) - drawn on December 13th after our orders close.
